Thanks, Maura for sharing your moving and emotional story. I felt like I was right there with you. You are a wonderful story teller and person.......oh no.....look quick...did you see it whizzing by......it was Maura's book flying off the shelves!!!!!!!
Whatever the commercial success of this book (and that would be well deserved), nothing can top the personal, relational, and spiritual success of going back to your hometown and being welcomed with open arms. Well done, my sister. Well done, indeed.
What a lovely picture you paint this morning, Maura. Thank you very much much. I’m recommending your memoir to everyone I know. Peace and Love from the shoreline.
I’m learning to say “you’re welcome” after 70 years in the States. That extra much snuck in though. I’ll blame my diminishing eyesight. Keeping calm and carrying on!
United Kingdom according to my American passport. A place in greater London, England, called Mill Hill in July 1945 (between VE Day and VJ Day). Then we lived on the Isle of Man.
Without even yet reading the essay, and just upon the knowledge of just a smattering of your gifts - and I'll mention that's largely owing to C. Schultz, I clicked the 'like' heart. I know the reading will be worth my while. I'm very happy to learn that you've perhaps migrated your content to substack Maura ! Out of only necessity, I hope that though well worth a cost, that it will not have some cost. SS disability only funds my household; It's just a fact. Brava anyway Maura !
Maura, a quick note from a HS friend of your sister Katie. I've lived in the Washington DC metro area since college. I feel you! Is Katie still in Buffalo?
We had a bookmobile that came to our school. We ran excitedly to our elementary school down the street to pick the three books we were allowed every two weeks. You brought back these wonderful memories for me today. Thank you Maura. looking forward to reading your book. ♥️
I LOVE this column!! My hometown library was long ago turned into the local historical society, so as nice as that is i really can't return to the authenticity; but, every now and then - like a few moments ago as i was reading this column - the lizard part of my brain rememers in vivid detail the scent, sights, and sounds of that sacred place. And the heart quickly follows. 😳Thanks, Maura
Of all of the fragrances they've made candles into, I wish they would do "Vintage Library Books". It'd sell out.
Yes they would!
Maura, I'm in school again becoming a librarian and this story made me so happy! Thank you.
Good for you! Librarians make the world better.

Ha ha, from your lips to God’s ears, my friend! You are not a half bad storyteller yourself!

You proved Thomas Wolfe wrong, Maura. Well done.
