Oh, thank you, Sheri! I will work hard to make the book a success, but honestly, I have gotten a lot out of the simple act of writing it. So, no matter what happens, I am grateful.
Getting rich from writing is certainly for the few - and the lucky. The rest of us write because we have stories to tell, no matter how many read them. Saving Ellen is a good story; readers will find it - and you.
You are so kind to say this, Susan. Your novels are really wonderful. I will be leaning on your experience as I move through this process! I’m such a newbie at this.
Dear Maura, reading this I am once again so glad to know you. I love your writing, which first astonished me in the entrepreneurial story you shared with me post-NYT. I agree 100% that writing a book must be its own reward. Once upon a time, I thought that I would jettison myself out of daily journalism by writing a book. I still find people who think publishing a book is a money-maker, including the guy who sold me my last car and had some journals of his Polish family he wanted to share. It's SO much work, people don't realize. I think if we were to calculate the dollar/hour it would be so small. Please add me to your email list for when your book publishes.
Maura, I also am looking forward to reading your book. I feel that because of Casey's Catch, I"ve gotten to know you so much better, even though we really never really were able to work together much. On the cusp of Thanksgiving, I just want to say, I am thankful for you.
Maura, I am so happy to hear that you have a book contract! As you say, writing has to be its own reward and there isn't necessarily a lot of money in it. And yet there may be ways to break through, like a Ted Talk? Does the deal include an audiobook? And then the script and the movie? Substack is becoming more like a social network where we are more likely to comnect with readers. I very much look forward to reading your book. The excerpt is riveting. The cream shall rise to the top!
Maura, I looked forward to every new tale as your memoir unfolded. Our Sunday chats at 4pm were a welcome ritual that helped get me through the COVID doldrums. What a story...And what a movie it will make. I’m staying tuned to hold your precious book in my hands.

I loved reading this, and admire your discipline. I can relate about how the writing brings back memories, sadness and smiles. Can’t wait to read it!!
I think it was easier to be disciplined during the shutdown- fewer distractions!
